For my design, I wanted the central focus to be more than just an image. I chose to incorporate images into the text as this element. Each letter is represented by a picture of an art form shown at the Sawdust Festival. I felt this was a more creative way to provide additional information without cluttering the ad with more text. I tried to break up the text so that it was easier to read as well as to create an ad that wasn’t completely centered. The background is a gradient of the main colors used on the Sawdust website to create a sense of unity between the two media forms.
For this project my main objective was to incorporate both client and art director needs without cluttering the space. I chose to use a smaller image with a larger grid opposed to the standard design which is usually divided in half. Since the purpose of the calendar is to utilize and organize dates, I used that as my main focus. My calendar is 11” x 13” and each month incorporates a different animal considered “exotic” or “rare”. I wanted my coupons to be at the bottom of the calendar so they are easy to tear off and use. I chose the facts I found to be most interesting and unknown about that month’s animal. I used the same color for the month title and the image border as a way to incorporate a unified theme.
For my Hollywood Menu I knew that I wanted a single page menu. I found this format to be more practical and less fussy than a tri-folded menu; I also think it looks more professional. Since there was a lot of text in a small area I knew I didn’t want to incorporate a lot of images so I chose an image that I made opaque and set that image as the background for my menu. I think this background unified the menu without cluttering it and added enough white space for the text to be readable. Using styles and alignment I formatted the headings centered and the body left-aligned to make sure the menu wasn’t all centered or all left aligned. I chose to right-align the restaurant name to provide the menu with some contrast.
